Scripta Minoa (part of the Sir John Linton Myres Archive)

Letter of Michael Ventris to Sir John Myres, 28 February 1952. Just four months before the announcement of the decipherment of Linear B, Ventris discussed the possibility of identifying ‘3 main places of the Knossos area’ on the Linear B tablets from Evans’s excavations.

Letter of Michael Ventris to Sir John Myres, where he comments on the "Tripods tablet" discovered by Carl Blegen at Pylos, 19 May 1953. This Linear B tablet provided additional confirmation to Ventris’s decipherment of the Linear B script.

The material listed below comes from the archive of Sir John Myres. It includes original notes, drafts, tables, cards, and charts that relate to the work of Arthur Evans and numerous other scholars working towards the publication of the Knossos documents and the decipherment of Linear B. The Knossos documents were published by John Myres in 1952 under the title Scripta Minoa II. Throughout the editing process, Myres consulted and received help from numerous scholars, including Alice Kober, Emmett Bennett, and Michael Ventris – it was Ventris who, a few months after the publication of Scripta Minoa II, announced the decipherment of Linear B proving that the language recorded in this early script was an archaic form of Greek. This archival material comprises a major resource regarding the pre-decipherment period of Linear B. It is catalogued with the Arthur Evans Archive because of its relevance to Evans’s work at Knossos.

TOTAL: 9 crates, 37 folders, 13 boxes, 1 envelope and some loose plates and proofs.
